wist it not
Leviticus 5:17
5:17 wist it not. The trespass offering, like the sin offering, was to provide an atonement (or “covering”)–see Leviticus 5:6, 10, 16–only for sins committed in ignorance (Leviticus 5:18). The latter could not be overlooked simply by reason of ignorance, however, for the sinner should have known his sin was wrong. When the sin was confessed (Leviticus 5:5) and the sin offering was given, and restitution is made to anyone injured by the sin (Leviticus 5:16), then the sin was forgiven (Leviticus 5:10,13,16,18).
